Premium Aloe Vera supplements are typically made from the inner gel, a clear, thin, gelatinous substance scooped out from the center of the Aloe leaf. The inner Aloe gel is different from the whole leaf in terms of consumption, as the pure gel is the part of the plant that is completely safe and edible for humans. If prepared correctly, it should be almost entirely devoid of aloin, the anthraquinone glycoside, which has been the source of much attention in studies. Too much aloin can cause diarrhea, bowel discomfort, and dehydration.

Nearly all other Aloe Vera products on the market utilize charcoal filtration or enzymes that they add to ground up Aloe Vera leaves to help remove the aloin. It is important to note that pure Aloe Vera is completely safe to consume in any amount and everyday, so long as you avoid the aloin found in the skin of the whole leaf. In other words, it is very difficult to drink too much of any Aloe product that is properly prepared and processed.
That being said, the recommended daily dosage will depend on what type of Aloe product you are using:
ALOE VERA JUICE/EXTRACT
Aloe Vera juices (otherwise known as extracts) are processed from the pure inner gel to concentrate the beneficial compounds and create a drinkable liquid that mixes easily into other beverages. Because of their concentration, the rule of thumb for Aloe extracts is usually to take 2 oz. twice daily (4 oz. per day total).
Recommended Daily Dose: 4 oz.
Tip: Aloe extracts go great with other beverages such as coconut water, fruit juices, or even carbonated and flavored waters.
ALOE VERA WATER
Aloe Vera Water is essentially pure inner aloe gel that is processed and diluted with water to make a functional beverage. These may or may not contain pulp and are frequently made from inner leaf powder freeze dried to make powder. There is no limit to how much Aloe water one should drink, but to experience the full benefits of Aloe, at least one full bottle (16 oz. per day) should be consumed. These products are often made using aloe powder and are not typically classified as a dietary supplement and will not provide nearly the concentrated volume of Aloe Vera found in a pure juice or extract, but they may be more convenient and some people enjoy the flavoring frequently added to these types of products.
Recommended Daily Dose: 16 oz.
ALOE VERA SUPPLEMENTS
Aloe Vera supplements are processed and concentrated to pack all the power of Aloe Vera into a capsule or powder. Concentrations can vary wildly depending upon the quality and quantify of Aloe plants used and production methods involved. Read the label on your Aloe supplement for specific instructions, but as a general rule of thumb 2 capsules (600 mg) per day should be taken and it’s recommended you look for certifications by the product seller to assure its quality. RAW ALOE VERA
If you have your own plants, you may choose to consume raw Aloe that you harvest yourself. We don’t generally recommend this for most people because consuming any part of the outer leaf can cause undesirable side effects and correctly preparing Aloe Vera for consumption is not generally easy or convenient for most people (plus, the aloin stains). Additionally, of the 400 species of aloe, only one aloe plant is known for its wellness properties, the Aloe Barbadensis Miller.
Recommended Daily Dose: Raw Aloe Is Not Recommended For Consumption.
Aloe Vera juices and waters are widely available in most supermarkets, grocery stores, health food stores, and online. As mentioned above, before purchasing,read the label! Make sure the beverage is made from just pure Aloe Vera gel (not the leaf and rind, too). We would highly recommend staying away from products with artificial flavors and sugar.
