Is Aloe Vera a Laxative?

Is Aloe Vera a Laxative?

Aloe Vera has gained worldwide popularity for its many benefits, from After Sun Exposure to immune support. In fact, with so many uses for overall wellness, this unique plant can be helpful for almost anyone. But what about undesired side effects?

Whether used specifically for the intention, or avoided as an undesired side effect, Aloe Vera has gained some notoriety for its laxative properties. Needless to say, those who ingest Aloe Vera to support their health may see this as cause for concern.

IS ALOE VERA A LAXATIVE?

The truth is that Aloe Vera gel itself is NOT a laxative, however, their a layer within the outer skin of whole leaf or raw Aloe Vera that contains a compound called Aloin which DOES have laxative effects. You want to avoid this substance and read on to find out more.

WHERE IS ALOIN FOUND?

Aloin is found in the latex coating just underneath the skin of the Aloe Vera leaf. This latex layer on the inner rind of the plant's leaves is made up of a yellowish sap that is bitter and can also stain your hands and clothes!

CAN THE ALOIN IN ALOE VERA RELIEVE CONSTIPATION?

While some have found aloin useful as a stimulant-laxative used to relieve constipation, the negative side effects of consuming aloin outweigh their benefits. The chemical is potentially dangerous to ingest and is even banned as a standalone ingredient for commercial sale in the United States.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ALOIN CONSUMPTION?

While many still seek aloin to use for its laxative properties, it is potentially dangerous due to the harsh effects it has on the human digestive system. Many who try to use aloin encounter several unwanted side effects, including dehydration, diarrhea, cramps, and electrolyte imbalances.

DO ALOE VERA PRODUCTS CONTAIN ALOIN?

In 2002 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a ruling stating that aloin was no longer "generally recognized as safe". In response, the Aloe industry has generally agreed to limit Aloin concentrations below 10 parts per million. In reality, most products, unless otherwise labeled, are close to 1 part per million.  Aloecure products typically test at levels below 0.1 part per million.

The key differentiator in AloeCure products, and our Juice in particular, is how we remove the aloin. Nearly all other Aloe Vera products on the market utilize charcoal filtration or added enzymes that to help remove the aloin. While that might sound fine, it also strips a large amount of the other components naturally found in Aloe Vera during the process. When you see other Aloe Vera Juices that are clear or don't have any smell or taste, that is almost certainly a sign they have used one of these two methods. While the taste of Aloe Vera isn't for everyone, if you aren't tasting it, you probably aren't drinking what you think you are.

At AloeCure, we have developed an entirely natural and proprietary process by which we remove all Aloin from our products without the addition of outside ingredients or enzymes or charcoal filtration. AloeCure process all of our aloe within 12 Hours of Harvest from our Organic plantations in order to ensure maximum preservation of nutrients found in wild Aloe Vera.
